Naval Covers

USS NEWPORT NEWS earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon (2 awards), the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the World War II Occupation Medal w/Europe Clasp, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (2 awards), the Vietnam Service Medal w/ 6 Campaign stars, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Ribbon w/Palm, the Republic of Vietnam Civil Action 1st Class Ribbon w/Palm and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Named for the city in which she was built, Newport News, Virginia.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. Homer T. Ferguson.

Three ships of the US Navy have borne the name NEWPORT NEWS - USS Newport News AK-3, USS Newport News CA-148 and USS Newport News SSN-750.
