Freighter Built 1918 by the Skinner and Eddy Corp., Seattle, WA for the United States Shipping Board (USSB) Acquired by U.S. Navy June 4 1918 USS WEST ALSEK ID-3119 Commissioned June 4 1918 Assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service (NOTS) Decommissioned January 27 1919 Returned to United States Shipping Board in 1919 WEST ALSEK (Commercial Service) Ownership retained by USSB. No references as to which company operated the ship under contract until 1929 Official Number: 216415 In 1929, converted to use pulverized coal-fired boilers for testing purposes Later operated under contract by the Oriole Line Abandoned by the USSB and scrapped in the fourth quarter of 1933

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each name and/or commissioning period. Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.
