This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

    Keel Laid September 27 1941 as "SS HARLEM HEIGHTS"
    Launched May 30 1942 - Acquired by the US Navy June 27 1942

  1. USS SUAMICO AO-49
    Commissioned August 10 1942 - Decommissioned January 20 1946

    Struck from the Naval Register (date unknown)
    Transferred to the Maritime Commission October 4 1946, name reverted to "SS HARLEM HEIGHTS"
    Reacquired by the US Navy January 23 1948 assigned to the Naval Transportation Service (NTS)
        to be operated under contract by American Pacific Steamship Co.

  2. USNS SUAMICO T-AO-49
    Transferred to the MSTS October 1 1949 and placed in service
    Placed out of service (date unknown)

    Struck from the Naval Register November 15 1974
    Returned to MARAD January 22 1975 and sold for scrapping
    Delivered to a breakers yard at Yokohama, Japan for dismantling February 13 1975

Naval Covers

Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

USS/USNS SUAMICO earned two Combat Action Ribbons, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (w/ 8 Battle stars), the World War II Victory Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal (with Asia clasp), the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - A river in Wisconsin emptying into Green Bay.
