Postmarks

If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

NAMESAKE - Rear Admiral Raphael Semmes USN (1809-1877)
Semmes was an officer in the United States Navy from 1826 to 1860 and the Confederate States Navy from 1860 to 1865. During the American Civil War he was Captain of the famous commerce raider CSS ALABAMA, taking a record fifty-five prizes. Late in the war he was promoted to Admiral and also served briefly as a Brigadier General in the Confederate States Army.
