Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

    Launched 1898 by Reiherstieg Schiffswerke & Maschinenfabrik, Hamburg, Germany

  1. BAHIA (Passenger-Cargo Ship)
  2. Owned and operated by the Hamburg South American Line
    Interned in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1914 at the outbreak of World War I

  3. PAYSANDU (Passenger-Cargo Ship)
  4. Seized by the Government of Uruguay in 1917 and transferred to the United States Shipping Board. Renamed Paysandu
    Acquired by U.S. Navy January 29 1919 while undergoing conversion to a troop transport ship

  5. USS PAYSANDU ID-3880
  6. Commissioned January 29 1919 - Decommissioned July 29 1919

  7. PAYSANDU (Passenger-Cargo Ship)
  8. Returned to Government of Uruguay in late 1919

    Scrapped at Copenhagen, Denmark, on 26 January 1928

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.
