The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU)is the only permanently forward-deployed MEU, and is America's expeditionary force-in-readiness in the Asia-Pacific region. It is based at Camp Hansen, Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler, Okinawa, Japan.
The MEU consists of a company-sized command element, a battalion landing team (BLT), (an infantry battalion reinforced with artillery, amphibious vehicle and other attachments), a medium tiltrotor squadron (reinforced), (which includes detachments of VTOL airplanes and heavy, light, and attack helicopters), and a combat logistics battalion with a total strength of about 2,200 personnel.

The 31st MEU has earned the Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon w/ three Bronze stars, the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with two Bronze stars, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Silver and four Bronze Stars, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Ribbon as of 2018.
