This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Passenger and vehicle ferry


1. LT. SAMUEL S. COURSEN (U.S. Army)
   Christened in 1956 as a ferry to oper­ate between Man­hat­tan and Gov­er­nors Island until December 31, 1965 when the Army decommissioned the base and transferred it to the Coast Guard.
   
   
2. USCG LT. SAMUEL S. COURSEN (Ferryboat)
   Continued as ferry to Governors Island Coast Guard base until 1996.
   Decommissioned on February 1 2003 after Governors Island became public property
   (Unable to find any documentation supporting decommissioning other than the cachet and postmarks seen below)
   
   
3. LT. SAMUEL S. COURSEN (Ferryboat)
   Sold to Trust for Gov­er­nors Island and con­tin­ued to pro­vide fer­ry ser­vice to Gov­er­nors Island every day.
   
   Expected to be replaced in mid-2024 with a new hybrid-electric ferry being built by Conrad Shipyard LLC based in Morgan City, LA.

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.
