GUADALCANAL LPH 7
Ship Name and Designation History
This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.
Keel Laid 1 September 1961 - Launched & Christened 16 March 1963 Struck from Naval Register 31 August 1994 Disposed of in support of Fleet training exercise 19 May 2005 |
This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).
Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

Postmarks
This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.
A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an
image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN
THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.
>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the
existing example.

USS GUADALCANAL received the following awards during her Naval career - Secretary of the Navy Letter of Commendation; Joint Meritorious Unit Award Ribbon; Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon; Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon; Navy Battle "E" Ribbon (4 awards); Navy Expeditionary Medal(4 awards); National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (6); Southwest Asia Service Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal.
NAMESAKE - A volcanic island 90 miles long and 25 miles wide in the Pacific Ocean, Solomon Islands group. Guadalcanal was captured by the Japanese in 1942. Before they could develop it as a bastion, Admiral Keily Turner's amphibious force struck in August. The next 4 months saw some of the bitterest fighting of World War II. Six major naval battles and uncounted smaller engagements were fought in the waters adjacent to the island. The victory on Guadalcanal was the next great step to victory following Midway.
The ships sponsor was Mrs. David M. Shoup, wife of Commandant of the US Marine Corps, General David M. Shoup.
Two ships of the US Navy have been named GUADALCANAL - USS Guadalcanal CVE-60 and USS Guadalcanal LPH-7.
