This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. Other Information
USS FIEBERLING earned the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 1 Campaign star, the World War II Victory Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal during her Naval career.
NAMESAKE - Langdon Kellogg Fieberling (January 3 1910 - June 4 1942)
Fieberling enlisted in the Naval Reserve October 7 1935, and after training and service as an Aviation Cadet, was commissioned Ensign March 1 1937. From July 26 1941, he aided in establishing Torpedo Squadron Eight, and when this unit was activated, served with it in USS HORNET CV-8. In the Battle of Midway, June 4 to 6 1942, the turning point of the Pacific War, Lieutenant Fieberling led a flight of his squadron in its heroic defiance of massive Japanese fighter and antiaircraft fire opposition to attack the enemy carriers June 4. Only one pilot of the squadron came back from that gallant sortie, and Lieutenant Fieberling was one of the dead. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his brave devotion to duty in this action.
The ships sponsor was Mrs. C. A. Fieberling, mother of Lieutenant Fieberling.
