Cachet Maker Frederick L Karcher
Cachets should be listed in chronological order based on earliest known usage. Use
the postmark date or best guess. This applies to add-on cachets as well.
"Note that some covers have "FREE" annotations that Karcher applied himself and are not actually from members of the ship. This in violation of the regulations which permitted free mail for crew members of ships in the war zone. Some of the ship markings might have been applied outside the zone for FREE mail also by unwary postal clerks. Others covers have forged or stolen postal markings, forged or stolen cachet designs or other suspected markings. It may never be known what is, or isn't, legitimate but all Karcher covers should looked at very carefully and treated with suspicion."
