Naval Covers

Postmarks

Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

NAMESAKE - Named in Honor of Lieutenant Charles Rollins Ware USN (March 11 1911 - June 4 1942)
Serving with Scouting Squadron 5 (VS-5), based on USS YORKTOWN CV-5 Lieutenant Ware was reported missing in action June 4 1942 during the Battle of Midway. He was posthumously awarded The Navy Cross for his heroism in pressing home his attack on the Japanese fleet in the face of fierce fighter opposition and formidable antiaircraft fire.
