Revision as of 02:22, 6 October 2021

Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Nimitz Class Attack Aircraft Carrier Nuclear
    Keel Laid 22 June 1968 - Launched 13 May 1972

  1. USS NIMITZ CVAN-68
  2. Commissioned 3 May 1975

  3. USS NIMITZ CVN-68
  4. Redesignated Multi-Purpose Aircraft Carrier Nuclear (CVN) 30 June 1975

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. USS Nimitz CVAN-68 / CVN-68 Covers Page 1    (1968-2020)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

NAMESAKE - Fleet Admiral Chester William Nimitz, USN (24 February 1885 – 20 February 1966)
Nimitz graduated the Naval Academy in 1905 and served until his death in 1966. Nimitz was a veteran of World War I and World War II and held the rank of Fleet Admiral. Nimitz played a major role in the naval history of World War II as Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet and Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas, commanding Allied air, land, and sea forces during World War II and after World War II was nominated as Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) from 1945-1947. Because Fleet Admiral was a lifetime rank, Nimitz remained on active duty for the rest of his life, with full pay and benefits.

The ships sponsor was Catherine Nimitz Lay, the daughter of Admiral Nimitz.
