"Note that some covers have "FREE" annotations that Karcher applied himself and are not actually from members of the ship. This in violation of the regulations which permitted free mail for crew members of ships in the war zone. These covers are indicated with the notation: SUSPECTED BOGUS USE OF POSTMARK AND FREE FRANKING PRIVILEGE.
