USS ALFRED A. CUNNINGHAM earned the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 1 Battle Star, the WWII Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), the Korean Service Medal w/ 6 Battle Stars and the Vietnam Service Medal w/ 7 Campaign stars during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Lt. Colonel Alfred Austell Cunningham, USMC (8 March 1882 - 27 May 1939)
LtCol. Cunningham was the first Marine Corps aviator and the first Director of Marine Corps Aviation. His military career included service in the Spanish-American War, World War I, and U.S. operations in the Caribbean during the 1920s.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. Alfred A. Cunningham, the widow of Lt. Col. Cunningham.
