Return to USS WASP CVS-18 Main Page

Covers should be listed in chronological order. Use the postmark date or best guess.

Each entry provides a link to the image of the front of the cover. There is also the option to have a link to the image of the back of the cover if there is anything of significance there. Finally, there is the primary date for the cover and the classification types for all postmarks based on the Locy System.

GEMINI Recovery Force

Cachet furnished by Morris W. Beck. From the Jon Howard collection.
Background History - This cover is postmarked for what space collectors call the Gemini-6 Scrub. Gemini-6 was supposed to be launched on this day to rendezvous with an earlier launched Agena target vehicle. The Atlas booster carrying the Agena failed and went in the water. NASA scrubbed the Gemini-6 launch as there was no target to preform a rendezvous with. USS Wasp was to be the prime recovery ship for the mission. Many ships in the recovery fleet held their covers until the rescheduled flight took place in December. However, a number of ships did postmark covers on the scrub date and send them to collectors. Scrub covers from the prime ship USS Wasp are extremely scarce. That, along with both the Beck RSC and ship’s RSC and the ship’s return address all combine to make a very desirable cover!
