Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

    Knox Class Destroyer Escort
    Keel Laid 12 September 1969 - Launched 20 June 1970

  1. USS PAUL DE-1080
  2. Commissioned 14 August 1971

  3. USS PAUL FF-1080
  4. Reclassified Frigate (FF) 30 June 1975
    Decommissioned 14 August 1992

Struck from Naval Register 11 January 1995
Grant Aid to Turkey as parts hulk 9 January 2000

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each name of the ship (for example, Bushnell AG-32 / Sumner AGS-5 are different names for the same ship so there should be one set of pages for Bushnell and one set for Sumner). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. USS Paul DE/FF-1080 Covers Page 1     (DATE RANGE)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each name and/or commissioning period. Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

NAMESAKE - Lance Corporal Joe Calvin Paul, USMC (April 23 1946 - August 19 1965)
L/Cpl Paul enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on April 26 1963 in Dayton OH shortly after his seventeenth birthday. In August 1963, after completing recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California, he was transferred to the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, where he underwent individual combat training with the Second Infantry Training Regiment, graduating in October 1963. He then joined Company H, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 1st Marine Brigade, in Hawaii where he was promoted to Private First Class in December 1963 and to Lance Corporal in October 1964. With that unit, he sailed for the Far East, arriving in Chu Lai, Republic of Vietnam on May 7 1965 where this unit was redesignated Company H, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. On August 18 1965, while serving as a fire team leader with Company H, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, LCpl Paul placed himself between his wounded comrades and the enemy and delivered effective suppressive fire in order to divert the Viet Cong long enough to allow the casualties to be evacuated. He fought in this exposed position until he was mortally wounded. He succumbed to his wounds the next day
L/Cpl Joe C. Paul was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions. The medal was presented to his parents on February 7 1967 during a ceremony in the Office of Secretary of the Navy Paul H. Nitze.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. Inez Paul, LCpl Joe Paul's mother.
