Placed out of service, struck from the Naval Register, and returned to the Maritime Administration September 13 1960
Converted to a floating power plant for the US Army at Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. in 1966
Transferred to the US Army for service in South Vietnam; Moored in port of Qui Nhon.
Broken up at Kaohsiung, Taiwan Aug 1971

Keel Laid March 11 1944 as Esso Memphis, a Maritime Administration type (T2-SE-A1) tanker hull
Delivered to Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey, June 28 1944

Acquired by the US Navy from the Maritime Commission November 28 1956

Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.
A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an
image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN
THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information
NAMESAKE - Named in honor of Memphis, Tennessee (which was in turn named for Memphis, Egypt).
Six ships of the US Navy have been named MEMPHIS - USS Memphis (1849), USS Memphis (1862), USS Memphis CA-10, USS Memphis CL-13, USNS Memphis T-AO-162 and USS Memphis SSN-691.
