Acquired by the United States Navy February 2 1884 Recommissioned January 15 1887 - Placed "in ordinary" July 1897 Mare Island Decommissioned April 30 1916 "Thetis" dropped off Lloyd's Register of Shipping circa 1937-38 In 1960, her hulk was purposely grounded off St. Johns, and she remained there until she broke up. |

The piece was mailed from South Butler, New York to the USS THETIS, San Francisco CA., in care of the "US Navy Pay Office". Forwarded to US Navy Yard, Mare Island CA. (3-line red rubberstamp marking). Postmarks on the back are from Savannah NY dated March 18, 1889 and Vallejo CA (Rec'd) March 25, 1889.
