Built in 1920 at Bethlehem Steel Co., Alameda, CA. for the United States Shipping Board (USSB) Listed as owned by Union Oil Co. of California from 1924 until at least 1942 Official Number: 219817 Reacquired by War Shipping Administration (WSA) 13 January 1943 Returned to WSA in February 1945 A Chief of Naval Operations confidential letter dated 24 February 1945 specified that upon arrival at Pearl Harbor, T.H., Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas (CinCPOA) was authorized to accept delivery of the ship from the WSA on a bareboat basis, and to place her in commission. Renamed YUCCA 9 March 1945 Converted for naval service at San Francisco, CA. Returned to the WSA for disposal 19 February 1946 Struck from the Naval Register 12 March 1946 Sold for scrapping 24 January 1947 |

USS YUCCA earned the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal during her Naval career.
NAMESAKE - Yucca is a genus of perennial shrubs and trees in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Agavoideae. Its 40-50 species are notable for their rosettes of evergreen, tough, sword-shaped leaves and large terminal panicles of white or whitish flowers. They are native to the hot and dry (arid) parts of the Americas and the Caribbean.
Two ships of the US Navy have borne the name YUCCA - USS Yucca (1864 Steamer) and USS Yucca IX-214.
