    Bareboat chartered to the War Department July 26 1945 for operation by the Army
    Served as a radio relay ship at the Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests

  4. Converted to an Army passenger-cargo vessel and renamed November 1947
    Laid up in the Maritime Administration's National Defense Reserve Fleet in 1950
    Transferred to the US Navy and assigned to MSTS January 16 1963

  6. Placed in service March 1 1963
    Placed out of service December 20 1969

    Returned to MARAD January 22 1970
    Struck from the Naval Register April 28 1970
    Sold for scrapping May 9 1973

 

Naval Covers

Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

USNS SGT. CURTIS F. SHOUP earned the National Defense Service Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - SSGT. Curtis F. Shoup, USA (January 11, 1921 – January 7, 1945)
Staff Sergeant Shoup, Company I, 346th Infantry, 87th Infantry Division, was awarded the Medal of Honor for acts of bravery near Tillet, Belgium on January 7, 1945.
Shoup also earned the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Military Medal (United Kingdom), the Croix de Guerre (Belgium), the Order of Léopold (Belgium) and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
