Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Wasp Class Carrier Authorized 27 March 1934 as replacement for USS Langley AV-3 Keel Laid 1 April 1936 - Launched 4 April 1939 USS WASP CV-7 Commissioned 25 April 1940 Heavily Damaged by Torpedoes 15 September 1942 by Japanese I-19 during the Battle of Guadalcanal Scuttled by USS Lansdowne DD-486 193 of her crew were lost with the ship and remain on active duty The wreckage of Wasp was found in January 2019 at the bottom of the Coral Sea, nearly 14,000 feet below the surface, by the late Paul G. Allen's R/V Petrel.

Other Information

USS WASP earned the American Defense Service Medal w/ "A" device and "Fleet" clasp, the American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal w/ 1 Battle star, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 2 Battle stars and the World War II Victory Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - A wasp is any insect of the order Hymenoptera and suborder Apocrita that is neither a bee nor an ant. Wasps often administer painful stings.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. Charles Edison (née Carolyn Hawkins), wife of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy Charles Edison.

Eleven ships of the US Navy have borne the name WASP - USS Wasp (1775), USS Wasp (1807), USS Wasp (1810), USS Wasp (1813), USS Wasp (1814), USS Wasp (1865), USS Wasp (1893), USS Wasp SP-1159, USS Wasp CV-7,
USS Wasp CV-18 and USS Wasp LHD-1.
