HISTORICAL NOTE
The 3rd Marine Division (MARDIV) was officially activated on 16 September 1942 at Camp Elliott, San Diego, CA. The Division participated in the Battle of Bougainville, the Battle of Guam and the Battle of Iwo Jima. The 3rd MARDIV was decommissioned on 28 December 1945 at MCB Camp Pendleton, CA. The Division was reactivated on 7 January 1952 at Camp Pendleton, CA. On 6 May 1965, the 3rd Marine Division arrived in Vietnam and departed South Vietnam in November 1969. The Division also took part in Operation Desert Storm and the Global War on Terrorism. The 3rd Marine Division is currently based at Camp Courtney, MCB Camp Smedley D. Butler, Okinawa, Japan.
