NAMESAKE - Gideon Welles (1 July 1802 – 11 February 1878)
Welles was the United States Secretary of the Navy from 1861 to 1869.

Two ships in the United States Navy have been named in his honor - USS Welles DD-257 and USS Welles DD-628
