Other Information
USS ARLEIGH BURKE DDG-51 has earned one Navy Unit Commendation, three Meritorious Unit Commendations, three Battle Efficiency E Awards, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Kuwait Liberation Medal, and five Sea Service Deployment Ribbons as of 2015.
NAMESAKE - Admiral Arleigh Albert Burke, USN (October 19, 1901 – January 1, 1996).
On June 8 1923, Burke graduated from the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy. Burke was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War serving on various ships and various commands, highlighted by three terms as Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) from 1955 to 1961. Burke retired as an Admiral on August 1 1961.
In 1962, Adm. Burke co-founded the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C. with Ambassador Dr. David Abshire.
Adm. Burke’s awards include the Navy Cross, the Navy Distinguished Service Medal (3), the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit w/ Combat “V”, 2 Gold Stars, Oak Leaf Cluster (4), the Purple Heart, the Presidential Unit Citation (3), the Navy Unit Commendation, the American Defense Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two silver stars and two bronze stars (13 engagements), the World War II Victory Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Philippine Liberation Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Ui Chi Medal (Korea), the Order of the Rising Sun, First Class (Japan) and the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav (Norway).
The US Navy, on July 4 1991, commissioned the Guided Missile Destroyer USS Arleigh Burke (DDG-51) in his honor while he was still alive. The USS Arleigh Burke is the first ship of the Arleigh Burke Class of Guided Missile Destroyers and when the program is completed, there will be 61 ships in the class.
The ships sponsor is Mrs. Roberta Burke, Adm. Burke's wife.
