Postmarks

There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

LUDLOW received six battle stars for her World War II service.

NAMESAKE - "Augustus C. Ludlow, born Newburgh, N.Y., 1 January 1792. He was appointed midshipment 2 April 1804 and commissioned Lieutenant 3 June 1810. Second in command to Capt. James Lawrence in Chesapeake, he was, like his captain, mortally wounded in their ship’s engagement with HMS Shannon 1 June 1813, and died at Halifax, Nova Scotia, 13 June." {DANFS}

Three ships of the US Navy have been named LUDLOW. The second and third ships were named for Lieutenant Augustus C. Ludlow.
