Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Built in 1881 at Dundee, Scotland Acquired by the United States Navy February 2 1884 USS THETIS Steam Whaler Commissioned February 2 1884 - Decommissioned November 20 1884 Recommissioned January 15 1887 - Placed "in ordinary" July 1897 Mare Island USRCS THETIS Transferred to the Revenue Cutter Service Spring 1899 Decommissioned April 30 1916 Sold as surplus June 6 1916, converted for Seal Hunting and operated out of Newfoundland for the next 44 years In 1960, her hulk was purposely grounded off St. Johns, and she remained there until she broke up.

The piece was mailed from South Butler, New York to the USS THETIS, San Francisco CA., in care of the "US Navy Pay Office". Forwarded to US Navy Yard, Mare Island CA. (3-line red rubberstamp marking). Postmarks on the back are from Savannah NY dated March 18, 1889 and Vallejo CA (Rec'd) March 25, 1889.
