Seattle IX 39 Covers Page 2
Return to USS Seattle IX-39 Main Page
Covers should be listed in chronological order. Use the postmark date or best guess.
Each entry provides a link to the image of the front of the cover. There is also
the option to have a link to the image of the back of the cover if there is anything
of significance there. Finally, there is the primary date for the cover and the
classification types for all postmarks based on the Locy System.
"Through the year 1937 cachetmakers Louis C. Weigand and Eugene C. Laird worked with Elmer LaVergne, mail clerk in the Brooklyn Receiving ship, to produce a set of 100 covers noting significant holidays, events and presidential birth anniversaries. All bore this cancel with "USS SEATTLE" on the top line, with varying dates and commemorative wording (six cancels have no date). The set was sold on commercial cacheted covers by Laird, 48 with star designs, 20 with historical designs and 32 for presidents. The postmark was also used on occasion on covers submitted by individual collectors." Catalog of United States Naval Postmarks - Volume II: Receiving Ships (Receiving Barracks, Stations, and Station Ships) Copyright 2012, David A. Kent, Editor.
Although Weigand and Laird get the credit for the covers, it appears the postmark was created by John C. Von Losberg with the 1936 cover shown on this page from the USS MAHAN DD-364 with this postmark used with ship specific wording in the postmark. Greg Ciesielski, Curator NCM.
