Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.


    LCI(L)-351 Class Landing Craft Infantry (Large)
    Keel Laid April 29 1944 - Launched May 27 1944

    Commissioned June 19 1944 - Decommissioned August 5 1946

  2. USS LSIL-1008
    Reclassified as a Landing Ship Infantry, Large (LSIL) February 28 1949

  3. USS SANDPIPER AMCU-38
    Named SANDPIPER and reclassified as a Coastal Minesweeper, Underwater Locator (AMCU) March 7 1952
    Conversion began April 15 1953 - Conversion completed November 5 1953
    Commissioned October 7 1953 - Transferred to Atlantic Reserve Fleet in 1954

  4. USS SANDPIPER MHC-38
    Reclassified a Coastal Mine Hunter (MHC) February 7 1955 while in reserve
    Struck from the Naval Register January 1 1960
    Transferred in October 1960 to the Miami Power Squadron, Miami, FL

 

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

LCI(L)-1008 earned two battle stars for her service during World War II.

NAMESAKE - A shore bird related to the plovers and snipes.
Two ships of the US Navy have been named for the bird, USS Sandpiper AVP-9/AM-51 and USS Sandpiper MHC-38.
