This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.
Completed as steam tug "Atlas" 1896 Acquired by the US Navy 4 April 1898 Recommissioned 12 November 1900 Decommissioned 31 July 1931 Struck from the Naval Register 11 February 1938 Laid up at Cavite P.I. awaiting disposal 1938-1941 Withdrawn from sale for conversion to a self-propelled diesel oil barge 9 July 1941 Served until the Philippines fell to the Japanese. Postmarks
This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each name and/or commissioning period. Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.
A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an
image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN
THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information
USS WOMPATUCK earned the Spanish Campaign Medal, the Philippines Campaign Medal, the World War I Victory Medal and the American Defense Service Medal w/ Fleet clasp during her Naval career.
NAMESAKE - Wompatuck (ca. 1627 - 1669), also spelled Wampatuck, and known to English settlers as Josiah Sagamore, was a leader of the Mattakeesett tribe of the Massachusett Indians. His name meant "snow goose" in the Wampanoag language. His English surname reflects his status as sachem, as well as that he was the son of Massachusett sachem Chickatawbut.
