Covers should be listed in chronological order. Use the postmark date or best guess.
Each entry provides a link to the image of the front of the cover. There is also the option to have a link to the image of the back of the cover if there is anything of significance there. Finally, there is the primary date for the cover and the classification types for all postmarks based on the Locy System.

Flight Cover |
Note: The sender, Walter H. Neumann; Radioman 3rd Class USN, typed a letter to his parents on Sept 26 aboard the USS Rehoboth, being postmarked on September 27 on the ship, postmarked at airport before flight takeoff from Perth Australia on September 29th and postmarked again on October 1 1946 when the flight landed in Columbus OH. This cover, although postmarked from the ship, is actually a Flight Cover. Using the 3rd produced Navy P2V-1 Neptune aircraft named "Truculent Turtle" (or simple "Turtle"), this aircraft flew from Perth Australia to Columbus OH non-stop. This was a distance of 11,236.6 miles in 55 hours-18 minutes. This record would stand until 1962.
Mr Neumann, who contributed the image of this cover to the Museum, goes on to explain that there were approximately 200 covers sent to prepare for the flight and that the crew and others connected with the flight were allowed to send one cover on the flight to someone - most likely family. His article on the flight and the cover (including the original letter to his parents) can be found at
VPNavy.org (Page 5)
An article by Commander Edward P. Stafford, U. S. Navy (Retired) with additional details on the flight of the "Turtle" can also be found at VPNavy.org (Page 1)
