USS VALLEY FORGE earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award Ribbon, the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Navy Battle "E" Ribbon (3 awards), the Navy Expeditionary Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (3 awards), the Southwest Asia Service Medal w/ 3 Campaign stars, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (6 awards), the US Coast Guard Special Operations Ribbon, the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia) and the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait) during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Named for Valley Forge, the 1777–1778 winter encampment of General George Washington's Continental Army.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. Julia V. Taft, wife of William H. Taft, III, Deputy Secretary of Defense.

Three ships of the US Navy have borne the name VALLEY FORGE - USS VALLEY FORGE CV-37 (Renamed Princeton), USS Valley Forge LPH-8 and USS Valley Forge CG-50.
