Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each name and/or commissioning period. Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

USS Shakamaxon had no post office but this penalty cover was postmarked at a mobile post office aboard LST-861. At this time, USS Shakamaxon was part of the Bikini Salvage Group, designated TF 1.2.7.

USS Shakamaxon had no post office but she did have a "Received" marking. This example is on the back of the cover and is not used to postmark the cover.

Other Information

USS SHAKAMAXON received the following awards during her Naval career - American Campaign Medal - Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal - World War II Victory Medal.

NAMESAKE - Chief Village of the Delaware Indians (now Kensington, Pa.) where an important treaty was signed on 23 June 1683 between William Penn and Chief Tammanen.

Two ships of the US Navy have been named SHAKAMAXON - USS Shakamaxon (1863 - Seagoing Monitor - never finished) and USS Shakamaxon AN-88.
