Other Information

USS HORACE A. BASS earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, the China Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (w/ 2 Battle stars), the World War II Victory Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal (w/ Asia clasp), the National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), the Korean Service Medal (w/ 6 Campaign stars), the United Nations Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Ensign Horace Ancel Bass, Jr., USN (22 September 1915 - 24 August 1942)
Ensign Bass was awarded the Navy Cross for combat air patrols off the USS YORKTOWN CV-5 during the Battle of Midway 4 June 1942. Flying off the USS SARATOGA CV-3 Ensign Bass was killed in action 24 August 1942 after being shot down during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, Guadalcanal.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. H. A. Bass, Jr., widow of Ensign Bass.
