Naval Covers

Other Information

USS DIXON earned the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the Navy Battle "E" Ribbon (3 awards), the National Defense Service Medal and the Southwest Asia Service Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - George E. Dixon ( - 1864)
Dixon was instrumental in design changes to the Submarine HUNLEY
He was aboard when the HUNLEY successfully deployed the first spar (torpedo) sinking the USS HOUSTONIC becoming the first ship to be sunk by Submarine. The HUNLEY was lost with all hands, including Dixon on February 17 1864, and was recovered 131 years later August 8 2000.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. Paul Masterson, wife of VAdm. Masterson, USN Ret.
