Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

    Keel Laid April 1 1963 - Launched and Christened February 15 1964

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. USS Edward McDonnell FF-1043 Covers Page 1    (1964-86)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

Other Information

EDWARD McDONNELL earned the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, two (2) Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbons, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and three (3) Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbons during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Admiral Edward Orrick McDonnell, USN
McDonnell was born on 13 November 1891 in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1912. During the engagements at the Battle of Vera Cruz on 21 and 22 April 1914, he was posted on the roof of the Terminal Hotel and landing. There, Ens. McDonnell established a signal station remaining day and night, maintaining communication between troops and ships. At this exposed post he was continually under fire. One man was killed and 3 wounded at his side during the 2 days' fighting. He showed extraordinary heroism and striking courage while maintaining his station. All signals got through, largely due to his heroic devotion to duty. For this action he earned the Medal of Honor. Remaining in the Navy, McDonnell progressed through the ranks to Admiral. After his retirement he was killed in the crash of a commercial airliner at Bolivia, South Carolina, on 6 January 1960 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. {DANFS}
