Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

    Fletcher Class Destroyer
    Keel Laid July 20 1942 - Launched July 31 1943

  1. USS PRICHETT DD-561
    Commissioned January 15 1944 - Decommissioned March 14 1946
    Recommissioned August 17 1951 - Decommissioned January 10 1970

Struck from Naval Register January 10 1970

  2. ITS GENIERE D-555 (Italian Naval Service)
Sold to Italy January 17 1970 and renamed

Stricken by Italy and scrapped 1975

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each name of the ship (for example, Bushnell AG-32 / Sumner AGS-5 are different names for the same ship so there should be one set of pages for Bushnell and one set for Sumner). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. Covers Page 1     (1955-67)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each name and/or commissioning period. Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

PRICHETT earned 8 battle stars for WWII and 2 for Korean service

NAMESAKE - Lieutenant Commander James M. Prichett, USN (1835–1871).
Prichett, born in Centreville, Indiana, in 1836, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1857. Prior to the Civil War he served aboard MISSISSIPPI on the China Station, and in RICHMOND on the Mediterranean Station.
Assigned to the Washington Navy Yard in 1861, he joined the Naval forces on the Mississippi River in 1862. On 4 July 1863, while commanding gunboat USS TYLER, he participated in, and won praise for, effective action in repulsing a superior Confederate force during the battle of Helena, Ark. He also commanded monitor MAHOPAC during the war.
After the war he sailed with Admiral David Farragut’s expedition to Russia and, in 1869, returned to the Pacific Squadron. Lieutenant Commander Prichett died in 1871 while attached to receiving ship VERMONT at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
