Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

NAMESAKE - Named after U.S. Navy officers Commodore David Porter (February 1, 1780 – March 3, 1843), and his son, Admiral David Dixon Porter (June 8, 1813 – February 13, 1891).

Commodore Porter was an officer in the United States Navy in the rank of captain and the honorary title of commodore. Porter commanded a number of U.S. naval ships, including the famous USS Constitution. He saw service in the War of 1812, the First Barbary War of 1815 and in the West Indies.

Admiral Porter was a United States Navy admiral and a member of one of the most distinguished families in the history of the U.S. Navy. Promoted as the second U.S. Navy officer ever to attain the rank of admiral, after his adoptive brother David G. Farragut, Porter helped improve the Navy as the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy after significant service in the American Civil War.

Five ships of the US Navy have honored these two Naval Officers - USS Porter TB-6, USS Porter DD-59, USS Porter DD-356, (lead ship of the PORTER class of destroyers),
USS Porter DD-800 and USS Porter DDG-78.

The ships sponsor is Mrs. Garland Johnson, the wife of Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Jay Johnson.
