Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Other Information

NAMESAKE - Rear Admiral Richard Hetherington O'Kane, USN (February 2, 1911 – February 16, 1994).
Kane, a United States Navy submarine commander in World War II, received the Medal of Honor for his service on the USS TANG SS-306. Having also served on the near legendary USS WAHOO SS-238, as Executive Officer (XO) and 'Approach Officer', he participated in more successful attacks on Japanese shipping than any other fighting submarine officer during the war.

Adm. O'Kane's medals and ribbons are: the Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross with two gold award stars, the Silver Star with two gold award stars, the Legion of Merit with Valor device, the Navy Commendation Medal with Valor device, the Purple Heart Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Navy Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon (three awards), the American Defense Service Medal with "Fleet" clasp, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with nine battle stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
