MONAGHAN earned 12 Battle Stars
* Pearl Harbor December 7th 1941 - Sank Japanese Mini-sub

NAMESAKE - Named in Honor of Ensign John R. Monaghan (1873-99) an officer in the United States Navy. In March 1899 Ensign Monaghan, onboard PHILADELPHIA, was sent to the troubled Samoan Islands. On April 1, while serving ashore with a combined unit of British, Americans and Samoans, his force was ambushed by another group of Samoans. When his unit's leader was wounded, Ensign Monaghan seized a rifle and attempted to rescue the injured officer. Ensign Monaghan severly out-numbered and out-gunned was killed
