Naval Covers

Other Information

USS KEARSARGE LHD-3 has earned the following awards - Combat Action Ribbon; Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon w/ two stars; Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon w/ 1 star; Navy Battle "E" Ribbon (6 awards); National Defense Service Medal w/ one star; Southwest Asia Service Medal; Kosovo Campaign Medal w/ 1 star; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Armed Forces Service Medal; Humanitarian Service Medal; Sea Service deployment Ribbon w/ 4 stars and the NATO Medal.

NAMESAKE - Five ships of the US Navy have been named KEARSARGE. The first was named for Mount Kearsarge and the later ones were named in honor of the first.
USS Kearsarge (Sloop of War 1861) - USS Kearsarge BB-5; USS Kearsarge CV-12 (Renamed HORNET prior to launch) - USS Kearsarge CV-33 and USS Kearsarge LHD-3.

The ships sponsor is Mrs. Alma Powell, wife of General Colin L. Powell, USA, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State.
