Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Locy Type FDC "Paid"

Commissioning. "Postal Clerk went AWOL, leaving the postal equipment locked in a safe to which no one else had the combination. This "PAID" marking and an undated Type 9-1 that had arrived after the clerk left were the only devices that the Postal Officer could find to use on commissioning covers." (USCS Postmark Catalog)

Other Information

USS FAHRION earned the Joint Meritorious Unit Award Ribbon, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, three (3) Navy E Ribbons, the National Defense Service Medal, two (2) Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon.

NAMESAKE - Admiral Frank George Fahrion (April 17 1894-January 16 1970).
During World War II, Fahrion was the Destroyer Screen Commander for the "YORKTOWN" carrier task force in the early Central Pacific raids on the Gilbert Islands. Commander of the Naval Torpedo Station in Newport, Rhode Island, February 1943 - July 1944. Commanding Officer of Battleship USS NORTH CAROLINA BB-55 during Fleet raids from the Philippines to Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Commander Cruiser Division Four throughout the Okinawa Campaign. Organizer and Director of the target and salvage units of the Joint Task Force One during "Operation Crossroads," the atomic bomb tests of July 1946 at Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands. Inspector General Pacific and U.S. Pacific Fleet: Commander Destroyers, U.S. Pacific Fleet (1946-1948), and Superintendent of the Naval Gun Factory, Washington, D.C. In July 1950, he assumed command of the Destroyer Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, and was Commander Amphibious Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, from January 1952 until his retirement on 1 May 1956. Admiral Fahrion was awarded The Legion of Merit with 3 Gold Stars and 2 Bronze Stars.
