Naval Covers

Postmarks

Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

USS TARPON earned the American Defense Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ seven battle stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the National Defense Service Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - A large, herring-like fish found abundantly in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.

The ships sponsor was Miss Eleanore Katherine Roosevelt, daughter of Assistant Secretary of the Navy Henry L. Roosevelt.

Two submarines of the US Navy have borne the name TARPON - USS Tarpon and USS Tarpon SS-175.

One cutter of the US Coast Guard has borne the name TARPON - USCGC Tarpon WPB-87310
