Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

  1. USS HENDERSON DD-785
    Commissioned 4 August 1945 - Decommissioned 30 September 1980

Struck from Naval Register 30 September 1980

  2. PNS TUGHRIL D-167 (Pakistani Naval Service)
Sold to Pakistan 1 October 1980

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. USS Henderson DD-785 Covers Page 1    (1946-1973)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

Other Information

USS HENDERSON earned the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), the Korean Service Medal w/ 8 battle stars, the Vietnam Service Medal w/ 7 Campaign stars and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Major Lofton R. Henderson, USMC (24 May 1903 - 4 June 1942).
Major Henderson was the commanding officer of VMSB-241 at the Battle of Midway and is recognized as the first Marine aviator to die during that battle while leading his squadron to attack the Japanese carrier forces.
Major Henderson was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism at the historic Battle of Midway. While his plane was leading 16 Marine Corps planes in a glide bombing attack on the aircraft carrier Hiryū, the left wing burst into flames as he began his final approach. Henderson continued the attack and perished as his plane dived toward the enemy carrier.
Note: In August 1942, the captured Japanese airfield on Guadalcanal was named Henderson Field in his honor.
