Other Information

USS BOUGAINVILLE earned the China Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 2 Battle stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal w/ "Asia" clasp during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - The largest of the Solomon Islands group, eastern New Guinea. Bougainville was controlled by Japanese forces during World War II, until U.S. troops landed on November 1, 1943. Allied airstrips were built on Bougainville by January 1944, for use in attacking the Japanese strongholds throughout the South Pacific. Although Japanese forces were essentially defeated on Bougainville by March 1944, intermittent Japanese resistance on the island continued through the end of the war.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. Sally A. Monfort.

Two ships of the US Navy have borne the name BOUGAINVILLE - USS Bougainville CVE-100 and USS Bougainville LHA-8.
