Other Information

USS TULARE earned the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Navy Battle "E" Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal w/ 1 bronze star, the Vietnam Service Medal w/ ten campaign stars, the Republic of Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation Ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - A county in the south central part of California which contains the Sequoia National Park and the Tule River Indian Reservation. The name Tulare is derived from the word tule, a large bullrush. Because of the abundance of tules which grew in its marshy ground, the name Tulare was given, in the 16th century, to the entire San Joaquin Valley.

The ships sponsor was Miss Carolyn Knight, daughter of the governor of California, Goodwin J. Knight.
