Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Wind Class Great Lakes Icebreaker Scheduled to be named "MANITOWOC" Keel Laid as "MACKINAW" March 20 1943 Launched & Christened March 4 1944 USCGC MACKINAW WAGB-83 Commissioned December 20 1944 - Decommissioned June 10 2006 Moved under its own power on 21 June 2006 to Mackinaw City, MI where she now serves as a museum ship known as Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum.

Naval Covers

Other Information

USCGC MACKINAW earned the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with three service stars and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal during her distinguished career.

NAMESAKE - Named for Mackinaw City, Michigan.

There has been two ships of the US Coast Guard that have borne the name MACKINAW - USCGC Mackinaw WAGB-83 and USCGC Mackinaw WLBB-30.
There has been one ship of the US Navy that has borne the name MACKINAW - USS Mackinaw (1863 Gunboat).
