This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Active Class Patrol Boat Keel Laid - Launched 27 January 1927 USCGC CRAWFORD WSC-134 Commissioned 21 February 1927 USS CRAWFORD SC-134 Transferred to the US Navy for WWII Duty 1 November 1941 USCGC CRAWFORD WSC-134 Returned to US Coast Guard 1 January 1946 - Decommissioned 15 August 1947 R/V CRAWFORD Transferred to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution 28 November 1955 - Sold to the University of Puerto Rico 1970 M/V SUN BIRD Unknown when University of Puerto Rico sold the boat or the name was changed On 13 May 1986 USCGC Manitou WPB-1302 stopped the M/V Sun Bird and confiscated 40,000 lb of marijuana hidden aboard. The former cutter and her 14-man crew were taken into custody. Her fate is unknown.

Naval Covers

Other Information

NAMESAKE - William Harris Crawford, (February 24, 1772 – September 15, 1834).
Crawford was an American politician and judge during the early 19th century. He served as United States Senator from Georgia from 1807 to 1813, United States Minister to France from 1813 to 1815, United States Secretary of War from 1815 to 1816 and United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1816 to 1825, and was a candidate for President of the United States in 1824.

There has been seven ships named after CRAWFORD - USRC CRAWFORD (1821), USRC CRAWFORD ex-SWIFTSURE (1825), USRC CRAWFORD (1830), USRC CRAWFORD ex-JEFFERSON (1833), USRC CRAWFORD (1849), USRC CRAWFORD ex-NANSEMOND (1865) and USCGC CRAWFORD WSC-134.

In addition to the ships, Crawford was featured on the 50 cent bill in 1875. Crawford is also the namesake of three towns and eight counties in the United States.
