Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Oliver Hazard Perry Class Guided Missile Frigate
    Keel Laid 18 September 1982 - Launched & Christened 16 July 1983

  1. USS RENTZ FFG-46
    Commissioned 30 June 1984
    Decommissioning Ceremony 9 May 2014
Officially Decommissioned and struck from the Naval Vessel Register 23 May 2014

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. USS Rentz FFG-46 Covers Page 1    (1984-2014)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

Other Information

The USS RENTZ earned the following awards during her Naval career - Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon w/ 1 star, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon w/ 2 stars, Navy Battle "E" Ribbon (3 awards), National Defense Service Medal w/ 1 star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal w/ 2 stars, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Global War On Terror Expeditionary Service Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon w/ 6 stars, Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon w/ 2 stars and the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait).

NAMESAKE - Commander (Chaplain) George Snavely Rentz, USN (July 25 1882 - March 1 1942). During the Battle of Sunda Strait on March 1 1942, the Australian light cruiser PERTH and USS HOUSTON CA-30 were both sunk. During the abandonment of HOUSTON, Commander Rentz entered the water and with other crewmembers made his way to safety on a floating aircraft pontoon. Aware that others were in worst need than he, he told them, "you men are young; I have lived the major part of my life, and I am willing to go." He gave up his position and lifejacket, trying to save the lives of other sailors, he perished with 692 other crew members.
Chaplain Rentz was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for selfless bravery following the loss of USS Houston in the Battle of Sunda Strait. He was the only Navy chaplain to be so honored during World War II.

The ships sponsor is Mrs. Neil F. Lansing, daughter of Chaplain Rentz.
