Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

Tambor Class Submarine Keel Laid July 5 1939 - Launched March 25 1940 USS TRITON SS-201 Commissioned August 15 1940 SUNK March 15 1943 Reported overdue from patrol and presumed lost. Post-war examination of Japanese records revealed that on March 15 1943, three Japanese destroyers attacked a submarine a little northwest of TRITON's assigned area and subsequently observed an oil slick, debris, and items with American markings.

Naval Covers

Postmarks

Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.
