Other Information

USS ORISKANY earned the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon (3 awards), the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon (3 awards), the China Service Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal w/ "Europe" clasp, the National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), the Korean Service Medal w/ 2 Campaign stars, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (3 awards), the Vietnam Service Medal w/ 10 Campaign stars, the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Ribbon w/ Palm & Frame, the United Nations Korean Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal during her Naval career.

USS ORISKANY CVA-34 was used as the fictional Carrier USS SAVO ISLAND in the 1954 movie The Bridges at Toko-Ri starring William Holden.

NAMESAKE - Named for a village in central New York state, scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the Revolutionary War 6 August 1777.

The ships sponsor was Mrs. Ida D. Cannon, wife of the Honorable Clarence Cannon, Congressman of the 9th District of Missouri.
